Membership is open to juniors, aged 8 to 18 years. Members may continue if they wish as seniors/assistants, attached to the junior cavalry.
Junior recruits are expected to make a commitment to attend regularly, and to respect the chain of command. They are required to supply certain items of their equipment (Long black riding boots and riding hat with black silk). All other uniform and equipment is supplied to the member, whose responsibility it is to maintain, in a good and presentable condition whenever required. The uniform and equipment remains the property of the Junior Cavalry. and must be returned on leaving the Cavalry.
The Junior Cavalry undertake to train its members to a good standard of riding, to carry out its core operation of a Mounted Drill, Musical Ride and Skill at Arms. To maintain and improve their theoretical and practical knowledge of Stable and Horse Management, to the standard laid down in the trade awards scheme.
New members join as recruits, and after attending the minimum of four troop sessions, and successfully completing their Preparatory Assessment, they are formally presented on parade, with their spurs, and appointed to the rank of Trooper.
